[edit] Critical Reception

Reviews of the single were generally mixed. A review from JoeUser.com gave it a negative review, stating that Duff sang the song because she was "tired of being the sweet, perfect girl" and that she "want[ed] to break free of it and be wild and crazy". He said that Duff had intentions of "appear[ing]serious and intelligent" but had ended up sounding "pretentious and circular". He also noted that the song's lyrics were just "nonsensical phrases".[1]

Si Harris of UKMIX gave the song a positive review, stating that the song was a "great, chart-friendly tune, which sound[ed] like it could [have been] an early Britney track". He also commented on the lyrics and production, saying that "The verses are pleasant, and build up to a climactic and brilliant chorus".[2]

[edit] Video

The single's music video was directed by Dave Meyers. In the video, Duff is shown in her house walking from room to room waiting for her boyfriend to come, who is stuck in the rain. While walking, her friends come over and watch television with her in her living room. At the end of the video, her boyfriend makes it to her house and she is shown hugging him in the rain. The video debuted on MTV's Total Request Live at 8, and peaked on the countdown at 3. It remained on the countdown for 25 days.[3] The video was nominated for the Best Pop Video at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards.[4]

[edit] Other Information

The song was also used as the theme for MTV's reality show Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County. It appears on the new soundtrack for Laguna Beach. A remixed version of the song appears on Duff's compilation album, Most Wanted. The song also appeared in the theactrical trailer for Duff's movie A Cinderella Story.

[edit] Controversy

During a performance of "Come Clean" on MTV's New Year's Eve 2004, the vocal track Duff was miming along to skipped, throwing her vocals out of sync with the live instruments. As a last resort, the track was cut out and Duff had to sing the ending lines of the song, after the final chorus, 100% live. Her vocals have been described as "completely flat", "out of tune" and "pitchy". This occasion has led many to question whether Duff sings live. Although it is proven that she can sing live after she sang her "Beat Of My Heart" single completely live at the 2005 American Music Awards to generally positive reviews from music critics although one stated that "her energy was not there during some of the performance".
