"Come Back To Bed" is a song by John Mayer. It is the fifth track from Heavier Things, Mayer's second studio album. Mayer has mentioned (even in his Grammy acceptance speech) that his song "Daughters" wasn't suitable as a single. He has mentioned that "Come Back To Bed" along with "Something's Missing", also from Heavier Things, should have been the singles from the album instead, despite the success "Daughters" gained him.

[edit] History

Throughout Mayer's musical career, he'd intended writing a "real" blues piece. From the album Room for Squares, his attempt at this was in writing "City Love", but to him, the song didn't achieve the truth of the blues. He then wrote as a "sequel" to "City Love" the song "Covered In Rain", which takes its name from "City Love"'s bridge. "Come Back To Bed" was Mayer's next attempt at achieving this piece. Mayer has stated that it came closer to the mark, but still didn't achieve what he was hoping for. In 2005, Mayer recorded a live performance with his group John Mayer Trio. On this live performance, released as Try!, the song "Gravity" featured and was later also released on Mayer's next studio album Continuum. After Continuum's release, Mayer announced that he'd finally written the song he'd been trying to write all these years, also adding that "City Love" and "Come Back To Bed" were his early attempts at "writing Gravity".[1]
