Hi there Col, just thought I'd provide you with a standard set of orientiation link above in case you find them useful. Great to see some of you Gutenburg folks around the traps– I admire your Gutenburg Australia site, which I've found to be most helpful for a few articles, keep up the good work! Thanks for adding the materials on Pieter de Carpentier; while we too prefer to have written citations for articles, it should not be too hard to find some sources which can back up the text. Hope to see you around, if there's anything I can help you with by all means drop me a note on my talk page. Cheers, --cjllw | TALK 01:08, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] No problems
No problems, Colly, you're welcome. Good work on tracking down that reference so quickly. I can see I'll have to look into the Gutenburg AU site even more frequently, seems to be a ton of great stuff there, expanding all the time- cheers!--cjllw | TALK 03:50, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Heeres resource
Hey Col, many thanks indeed to the pointer to that great-looking resource compendium of original 17thC Dutch explorers by Heeres; this certainly looks to be fine reference material indeed. For now I've added it to the links at European exploration of Australia, but in time it would be useful to have links on the explorers' individual articles to the relevant chapters of this work. I'd also be most interested in using the material to further expand upon the relevant articles, since the coverage of Dutch explorers is admittedly still quite patchy. This will help a lot though, and when I get the chance I'll start incorporating the references into these articles, or even perhaps start a Dutch exploration of Australia article. Once again, appreciate the information- cheers!--cjllw | TALK 08:50, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] 17thC Dutch surnames
Hi Col, I agree that the full, not abbreviated, surname would be a better article title for Dutch characters in this period- even if (as with Carstensz) most english-speakers might be more familiar with the latter. I'll happily move the article to Jan Carstenszoon, since Jan Carstensz will redirect there I don't anticipate any controversy over the move, so no need to put it up for a consensus vote first. If dispute does arise, that can be dealt with in due course. Cheers!--cjllw | TALK 22:33, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] de Carpentier img, Torres
Hi Col. Thanks again for the pointers to those other resources - it's becoming hard to keep up! And I agree, at times it can be a rewarding experience to flesh out articles here, you never know who might be interested or be able to bring some interesting information to light.
As for the img of de Carpentier you've been able to obtain, it would be great to be able to add it to the article. The lack of source information can be an issue, though - even when the img is most likely to be in the Public Domain, owing to its age. Is the img you have similar to this one, which I found on what appears to be some amateur historian's site (mostly in Dutch, but with portions in English; they actually have a series on the Governors-General of the Dutch East Indies, here, which could be useful). According to the site, the portraits come from paintings originally held at the "State Collection in the Palace Rijswijk in Weltevreden, in the south of Batavia", and much of the information seems to come from a 1941 book, Governeurs-General van Nederlandisch-Indië by F.W. Stapel. If your img is similar, then we can presume it is from an artwork not in copyright, and I think (but I'm no expert) that it could be posted. Perhaps you could upload the image, let me know that it's posted, and I'll see what particular license tag would be appropriate. At the worst, the img will only be deleted. Since it is more than likely it dates from a contemporary period, even if the original artist or source is unknown, we should be safe enough to include it.
As for the Torres article, I agree that it is in a parlous state, doesn't seem to have been much updated since it was first created a couple of years ago. Will certainly look into correcting, at the first opportunity- in my experience, there's rather a lot to be done around the place! Keep up the good work, and cheers.--cjllw | TALK 04:49, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks for the reference
Hi Col, hope PG of A is going well!
Thanks for the notification about those recently-available references, an invaluable resource as always! I'm afraid I've not had much time devoted to editing on this topical area in recent months, but I hope that I will soon return to the fray in that area, Wikitime and Real Life permitting. Cheers, --cjllw | TALK 05:39, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Gluck
Thanks! We probably cross-posted but I did explain on talk why I'm sure that Gluckstein is the correct name. (There is even a Sunday Independent story calling her Hannah Gluckman, but since that only gives one Google hit, I'm not sure it rates a redirect.)
If you want to move the info about Medallion, Nesta Obermer, The Well of Loneliness, etc. from your redirected article over to Gluck (Hannah Gluckstein) that would be great. —Celithemis 22:51, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
- I've found glbtq.com pretty reliable for the most part, even though getting her name wrong is an embarrassing error. It's up to you, but if you want to go ahead and merge the info, I can double check and see if anything in it is in conflict with Souhami. I didn't see any problems at first glance.
- I'm actually working on a new article about The Well right now. I hadn't realized it would be public domain in Australia already. There's an image of the whole painting Medallion here if you haven't seen one. Unfortunately most of Gluck's work is in private collections and there aren't many color reproductions available; that's one of the few that I've found. —Celithemis 23:45, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Welcome
Hi Collywolly, I saw you've been doing some great work on some of the WA articles. I just wanted to say thanks, and please sing out if you need a hand or want to discuss anything - great to have you on-board. — Moondyne 13:49, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- There is no technical reason why you shouldn't reply on your own discussion page rather than mine, except that its a convention here that we generally reply at the page of the person to whom you want to send the message. The obvious downside of this is that lengthy discussions get disjointed, especially so if 3 or more people are involved and then usually the discussion continues on one page or another. Some users choose to leave a note at the top of their page that they only reply to messages on their own page, but these are a small minority. The convention works fine generally, but just be aware that if you do choose to not reply on the other persons page, unless he looks at your page, he may never know you've replied or responded. — Moondyne 01:25, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
