Colipon (zh:科乐邦) is the name I use on Wikipedia, having no particular political, commercial, or ideological connections. It is simply a unique name. I worked as a sociology professor in Shanxi Province, and I am currently an editor for a few journals on Mainland China and have been an administrator on the Chinese Wikipedia since February 2004. I also profess some original research of my own in the areas of sociology, religious studies, and history. Growing up during the Cultural Revolution while my parents moved around the country, I became very interested in the topics of history and sociology, and politics from a young age. A native of Nanjing, China, and a graduate of Inner Mongolia University, and having taken courses at the University of British Columbia in the mid 1990's, I am currently a permanent resident of Calgary, Alberta. My chinese name is Fang Hongshi. My English name is Gordon Fang. People refer to me as Gordie, you could do so if you wish in my talk pages. I specialize in the study of the contrast between Western and Eastern cultures, as well as historical sociology in China. I am deeply interested in research into Chinese history. I am currently not affiliated with any political organizations, but have been in the past. In my free time I enjoy sports. I am an avid Soccer and Ice Hockey fan; I am also constantly reading and digging through history. Dr. Tang Haoming's three-book series on General Zeng Guofan stood out in the sea of fantasy history that is the norm in Chinese bookstores.

My reasons for my decision to contribute to Wikipedia is two-fold. One, my contributions to the China-related articles is driven by a personal urge to make the English speaking world more aware and less ignorant about China, and shine light on the common misconceptions. Secondly, my personal experiences, professional background and academic interest has makes me confident in being a reviewer on controversial topics.

Recently my topics of research are Qing Dynasty history and the controversy surrounding Falun Gong. In addition, my personal and professional experiences and connections in China, along with my frequent visits there (most recently traveled China July-August 2006, plan to go again soon) have instigated a deep interest within me to research and analyze contemporary Chinese society and its many challenges. I am not politically aligned, and many of my observations are from a strictly sociological point of view.

[edit] Quotations of Note

These are just notable quotations. It is not implied I agree with them.

[edit] On Mao Zedong

Quite frankly, the Communist Party of China is a better Mao biographer than Chang and Halliday.

[edit] On Chinese government

(Referring to Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to unsafe coal mines)

In a country famously assumed to be authoritarian, like China, you might think such repeated investment of personal authority by a top leader would produce rapid results.

Time Magazine, March 12, 2007

[edit] On Falun Gong

You want the truth? There is no truth. The battle between the Communist Party of China and Falun Gong is a war fought between two liars. It is a question of whose lies are more convincing.

— A friend of mine, Discussion over tea on August 4, 2006. Shanghai, China.

Why doesn't Falun Gong just let Buddha Law take care of the CCP? With the amount of problems it faces any optimist would tell you it will self-destruct sooner or later. Falun Gong only makes itself look bad with its horrendously hypocritical spread of all the opinionated anti-CCP rhetoric.

— Jason Lockton, January 2007

[edit] On China's leaders

Well, to save and strengthen China, Mao could've done some stuff that he didn't do, Deng could've done some stuff that he forgot to do, Jiang just didn't do anything right, and Hu... well, it almost feels like it's too late.

— A friend of mine, Discussion over coffee on Jan 21, 2007. Calgary, Canada.

[edit] From the 2007 CCTV New Year's Gala

The following is a piece read out by a group of school kids from Beijing's Haidian District, reputedly the children of parents who are part of the rural-urban mass migration, coming into the cities in search for work.
