Talk:Colored People's Time
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
african american is not accurate. not every black person is from africa. the black people who are here because their families were brought here on slaveships are not african since the importation of africans was entirely banned on the first day of 1808. so to say that blacks in america are "african american" is just nonsensical.
- while technically true, it is common usage. This may be a generational thing; people who grew up in the 80s were taught to use African American instead of black. There's more at African American; I quote in part: "This usage of the term African American refers specifically to black African ancestry and American nationality... there is disagreement as to whether the term should refer only to Blacks who can trace their American roots to the colonial period or slavery, or whether it also should include black immigrants from Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America and their descendants. To some extent, this is a matter of cultural vs. geographic meaning." Given the pejorative nature of the term in question, it's a debatable question exactly how to refer to the "Colored People" the article discusses without raising offense. - Thanks, Metahacker, but it wasn't a revert war, and the user and I discussed options and other ways to address the situation. My recommendation was to begin with the article discussion page, which is where s/he came. Neither of us worked through this only to be scolded. CMacMillan 02:28, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- Awesome! I rescind the scolding and blame..uh...low barometric pressure. -- Metahacker 02:13, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
