Elf and other contributors: I take it back. The quick release collar picture you chose is fine. I still don't understand why I would want the quick-release feature.

I think some more exposition is needed on choke collars and pinch collars. The pictures are great, but I strongly feel that the pinch collar is a better training device. I know about using the choke collar as a "command" by making a zipping/ripping noise and all that, but you can hurt a dog with a choke collar much easier and and you can train it much easier with a pinch collar. YMMV. Ortolan88 20:02, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Quick-release: For example: In dog agility, dogs run naked. This means that 4 or 5 times at day at a competition my dogs' collars must be off. I don't like to leave them off all day, however, in the wild off-chance that they might get loose. So I'm constantly removing and replacing the collars. Standard buckles are a pain in the patootie. Even when just grooming the dog on a regular basis (getting all that gawd-awful fur out of the ruffs) or bathing the dog, it's so much easier to remove than a regular buckle. And in my experience, regular buckles break more often than the quick-release (although another trainer I know has one dog who yanks so abruptly when restrained briefly that it has broken several quick-release buckles--including a borrowed one of mine that had been fine on my dog for 2 years--and this is a 30-lb dog!). The only downside is that, if you grab the dog's collar suddenly and firmly in an emergency--guess what--if the quick release happens to be where you grab it...
Re: expanding: go for it. I've talked to several trainers who agree with you. On the other hand--at dog shows where the public is likely to view dogs and handlers, pinch collars are often not allowed because they look worse, whereas slip collars are more often allowed--although all training collars are often disallowed completely, even at obedience fun matches which aren't even real competitions and are about training your dog. (Not sure whether Martingales are ever disallowed--I've not used one myself so I wasn't paying attention. :-) ) It's a weird world. Personally, having used all, I'm inclined to always always do my d***est to use a flat collar to achieve results before resorting to the others. Elf | Talk 20:41, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Any thoughts on putting the dog-related collar info in a different article? It just seems kind of wierd to me to have a couple of paragraphs about other collars, then a bunch on dog collars.... [[User:Lachatdelarue|Lachatdelarue (talk)]] 14:01, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Funny you should mention that. I have a note on my desk to turn the collar article into sort of a disambig page, with references to collar (clothing), collar (animal), and like that. But I hadn't decided whether we really needed separate collar (animal) and collar(dog) articles... because the latter would certainly dominate the former if they were a single article. THoughts? I went ahead and broke the articles apart. I am copying the discussion above on dog collars to the new collar (animal). Help in relinking would be appreciated! PKM 20:24, 26 November 2005 (UTC)
