Gran Colombia, was a short-lived republic in South America consisting of present-day Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama. Its territory corresponded more or less to the jurisdiction of the Virreino de la Nueva Granada. The official name at the time was República de Colombia (Republic of Colombia). "Gran" ("Great") that precedes the name was not used by contemporaries. It was an addition by later historians in order to distinguish it from the present-day Republic of Colombia; therefore there was never a country named "Gran Colombia".
