Coltec is a Native American who was born in 1150, Mississippi. Coltec grew up in the Cahokia Indian tribe. He grew up to be a medicine man, protecting his people from evil. Coltec became "Hayoka" to his tribe, was able to absorb evil into himself. Later on, he was killed while trying to save a man from dying, performing a ritual. Coltec became Immortal, he met an Immortal who taught him what he is and how to defend himself.

Coltec lived proudly with his people, protecting it from evil, but later on when the droughts, famine, and the white men came along, his people died out, but Coltec survived. Coltec could not save his people, so Coltec became "Hayoka" to the world, ridding the world of evil. Coltec took the heads of many evil Immortals to protect the world.

In South Dakota, Coltec accidentally caused the death of a American soldier by accidentally scaring the horse, causing him to fall off. Coltec is arrested and taken into custody by the military, it was here he would meet Duncan MacLeod. Duncan, who just recently lost the love of his life, Little Deer, a Sioux woman. Duncan was living with the Sioux Indians till they were killed by the American soldiers, led by an Immortal named Kern, who was a scalp hunter at the time. Duncan was so full of anger, he attacked some of the soldiers, looking for Kern. Duncan was arrested and thrown in a cell with Coltec. Coltec saw that Duncan was full of rage. Coltec wanted to help take away the anger Duncan has. At first, Duncan didn't want Coltec's help, but realised he needed help. Coltec performed the ritual to took away Duncan's anger and hate into himself. Later on, Duncan became great friends with Coltec.

In Greenwich, New York, Coltec is searching for an Immortal named Bryce Korland, who is a killer. Korland is a Beatnik poet, he is on stage, giving his poetry, Duncan MacLeod is there to take Korland's head. Bryce Korland goes outside to face Duncan, but runs into Coltec, who fight him and takes his head. Korland's head was the first head Coltec took in over 200 years because Coltec was feeling something happening to him from taking quickenings from evil immortals.

Coltec is going to Seacouver, Washington, to visit Duncan MacLeod, he calls Duncan to tell him he is coming to town. Later on, Coltec goes to a Chinese restaurant to get some food, he senses the presence of another Immortal, he is Horvan Kant, also known as "Harry Kant". Coltec goes into the restaurant and sees Horvan Kant robbing the place and stops Kant. Coltec and Kant go outside the retaurant and go at it with their sword. Coltec defeats Horvan Kank, receives his Quickening, but it is a Dark Quickening. Coltec goes into the restaurant, puts on Kant's jacket, robs and kills the owner.

Later on, Duncan MacLeod and Richie Ryan go out to the river to meet Coltec. Duncan and Richie meet up with Coltec and Coltec attacks Richie. Duncan is shocked to see Coltec doing what he is doing. Duncan fights Coltec and knocks him over the bridge. Duncan and Richie go to the river and Duncan finds Coltec's medicine pouch.

At Joe Dawson's bar, they talk about what happened to Coltec, they see the news and see Coltec killing the man at the restaurant. Duncan figues out what happened to Coltec, a Dark Quickening has made Coltec a killer. Coltec is now taking on the personalities of every Immortal he beheaded, like Horvan Kant and later on, Bryce Korland. Coltec blows up a pawn shop, which kills the owner. Duncan tries to help Coltec with the same ritual Coltec performed on him, but it is not successful. Later on, Duncan realises he has to kill Coltec, he finds Coltec and they fight, Duncan takes the head of Coltec and receives the Dark Quickening from Coltec.
