Colportage

Colportage is the distribution of religious publications, books, tracts, etc., by carriers called colporteurs. The term is derived from French colporter, "to carry on one's neck," from Latin col, Latin collum, "neck," + porter, Latin portare, "to carry." John Ellison Vassar was a colporteur for the American Tract Society.
