Colonsay House

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Colonsay House is a Georgian country house on the island of Colonsay, in the Scottish Inner Hebrides. Since 1905 the house has been the property of the island's owners, the Barons Strathcona, and is currently occupied by the present baron's eldest son, Alexander Howard.

The house has a public rhododendron and woodland garden covering some 20 acres. It was planted mostly in the 1930s, and has a wide variety, not only of rhododendrons, but also of trees and shrubs including some exotic species from the southern hemisphere. As the climate is mild, it is possible to grow a large variety of plants, including subtropical and more tender plants. There are eucalyptus, myrtle, acacia, eucryphia and 50 feet tall magnolias dotted throughout the garden.
