Colonial Players

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Colonial Players remains, over fifty years after its founding, one of the pillars of Annapolis, Maryland's active community theatre scene. Founded in 1949, the theatre moved into its current space at 108 East St. (less than a block from the state capitol) in 1955. Colonial's two claims to fame are its unique theatre-in-the-round setup and its annual production of a musical A Christmas Carol.

Buying tickets for the limited showing of A Christmas Carol is considered a local tradition with cast members serving hot cider and singing Christmas carols to those waiting in line for the box office. Those who are first in line often camp out in front of the box office overnight. It is what many call the theatre lovers' tailgate party.

In recent years, the company has taken steps to introduce more commercially risky shows into its repertoire by establishing an artistic committee to select its plays. Its other endeavors include a one-act festival and a promising playwright competition.

Their 2006-2007 season includes productions of Copenhagen, Jake's Women, A Christmas Carol, A Moon for the Misbegotten, Jekyll and Hyde, and Moon Over Buffalo.

The 2007-2008 season will consist of productions of Incorruptible, Kindertransport, A Christmas Carol, Enchanted April, Kiss Me Kate, and Hauptman.
