[edit] Early life
Colm Bonnar was born in Cashel, County Tipperary in 1964. The middle child in a family of three boys, he was educated locally and later attended Cashel CBS. Here his skills at both hurling and football came to the fore and he won Croke, Fitzgerald and McGabhann Cup medals in both codes. In 1980 and 1982 Bonnar won two All-Ireland ‘B’ hurling medals with the school.
[edit] Playing career
[edit] Club
Bonnar played his club hurling with the local Cashel King Cormac's club. He enjoyed some success at underage levels, and in 1991 he captained the side to a senior county championship. This was later converted into a Munster club hurling title.
[edit] Minor, Under-21 & Junior
In the early 1980s Bonnar enjoyed a very successful career with the Tipperary minor and under-21 teams. His first successes came in 1982 when he won a Munster minor title, which was closely followed by an All-Ireland minor medal. In 1983, 1984 and 1985 Bonnar won three Munster under-21 titles in-a-row, with the final victory being converted into an All-Ireland medal. That same year Bonnar also won a Munster junior hurling medal, however, Wexford accounted for Tipperary in the All-Ireland final.
[edit] Senior
In 1986 Bonnar made his senior debut in the Munster Championship. The following year he won his first senior Munster medal, however, Tipperary were defeated by Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final. In 1988 Bonnar won his first National Hurling League title, before later winning his second provincial medal. Galway once again accounted for Tipp in the All-Ireland final. In spite of this Bonnar’s performance in the championship earned him an All-Star award. In 1989 Bonnar captured a third consecutive Munster medal. This was later converted into his first senior All-Ireland medal following a final victory over Antrim.
Two years later in 1991 Bonnar captured a fourth provincial medal before later winning his second All-Ireland medal following a win over Kilkenny. Two years later in 1993 he won his fifth Munster medal, however, Tipperary were later beaten by Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final. Following this defeat Bonnar decide to retire from inter-county hurling.
