College of the Sequoias

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The College of the Sequoias should not be confused with the similarly named College of the Redwoods in the northern California town of Eureka and College of the Siskiyous in Weed, California.

College of the Sequoias (COS) is a public two-year community college located in Visalia in Tulare County, in California's San Joaquin Valley. The current enrollment of COS is 10,200 students, and the college offers a variety of transfer, vocational, and community-based classes, including the fire/police academies for Tulare and Kings counties. The college is named for the Giant Sequoia trees native to the nearby Sierra Nevada mountain range.

The college officially began in 1926, established by the Visalia Unified School District under the name Visalia Junior College. The college moved to a permanent campus in 1939, and in 1949 changed its name as part of the formation of an independent College of the Sequoias Community College District.
