College of Teachers

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The College of Teachers (formerly known as the College of Preceptors) is a large association of teachers and associated para-professionals in the United Kingdom.

[edit] History

The College of Teachers was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1849 as The College of Preceptors. Subsequently, in 1998 it changed its name to the College of Teachers. During the 1870s, the College helped to establish education as a subject worthy of study at University level, resulting in the appointment of Joseph Payne as the first Professor of Education. During the 1950s the college pioneered management training schemes for teachers (at the time these were known as school administration courses).

In more recent years, the College has been a key played in the promotion of practical excellence for teachers, and has established many Continuing Professional Development schemes and courses, including the Certificate of Education Studies.
