Coles Express is a chain of Australian convenience stores that predominantly focus on petrol sales. Coles Group (then Coles Myer) purchased the rights to the business from the existing Shell Multi-site Franchisees (MSF) in 2003 for a total amount less than $100 million

Coles Express' only affiliation with Shell is that Shell is exclusive supplier of fuel products, provide the service station property and maintain the presence of the Shell pecten on ‘Site Identification’ signage (price board).

A number of Shell-branded service stations (particularly in country areas) remain unassociated with Coles Express.

[edit] The Coles Group/Shell Alliance

The alliance involves:

Coles Group:

  • Directly employing the service station Team Members;
  • Management under "Everyday Needs Business' branch within Coles Group,
  • Setting fuel and shop prices.

Shell:

  • Exclusive fuel supplier;
  • Provide the service station property.
  • Maintain the pecten presence on Site Identification signage.

[edit] History

The Coles Express brand originally referred to a small number of medium sized supermarkets Coles ran in the CBDs of Melbourne and Sydney. These stores are now known as Coles Central.

The current Coles Express chain started at more than 150 service stations in Victoria in July 2003 and was followed by a national rollout completed in mid 2004. There are now over 600 Coles Express service stations across Australia.

All of the former Shell MSF sites (eg. Nexecon or Mistearl Northshore) became Coles Express stores. This transition included the petrol stations & stand-alone convenience stores in Melbourne’s CBD (which have been closed as of December 2006).

If a customer spends over AUD$30 in one transaction at Coles, Coles Liquor, Coles Central or Pick 'n Pay Hypermarket, they are entitled to a fuel discount offer of 4c per litre.

In 2006, many garages at Coles Express service stations became Kmart Tyre and Auto Service outlets.
