Coker unit

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A coker or coker unit is an oil refinery processing unit that converts the residual oil from the vacuum distillation column or the atmospheric distillation column (see continuous distillation) into gasoline, diesel or jet fuel and green petroleum coke, a form of coke. In this context, "green" means without having moisture and other volatiles removed from the coke in a calcining kiln, but a calcining step may also be added.

In a coker unit the feed is heated for thermal cracking. Not all refineries have coker units.
