A coffee snob is distinct from other snobs in that the focus of their snobbery is internal, rather than external.

A coffee snob seeks to imbibe only freshly roasted, ground and properly brewed coffee. Many will choose to decline an offer of instant coffee. Some coffee snobs prefer to engage in home roasting coffee as the preferred method of ensuring the quality of their coffee.

A coffee snob is not by definition also a coffee addict but some may also be addicts.

Most coffee snobs do not seek to impose their will on others but they do encourage coffee snobbery in others when they can. However it can be said that, as with Wine Snobs, Coffee Snobs can put others off experimenting, asking questions and learning about coffee with their attitudes and elitism.

The term 'Coffee Snob' originated in Australia during the late 1990s. Due to a quirk in the Australian psyche, coffee snobs willingly adopt the term rather than viewing it as derogatory. The use of the term in this way is uniquely Australian and reflects a long-held Australian tradition of 'thumbing the nose' at established conventions.

However, coffee snobs are by no means unique to Australia and are heavily represented in the slow food community that is growing worldwide.

There are a number of groups both online and within the general community that market to coffee snobs, these include social organisations , businesses and whole food cooperatives.

One of the largest Australian green bean co-ops and general coffee discussion forums is known by the name "CoffeeSnobs".
