Coenobitidae are a family of hermit crabs with only two genera: Birgus, the coconut crab, and Coenobita, a genus of terrestrial hermit crabs centred in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, but also extending to the Atlantic Ocean and the Red Sea. Several species of Coenobita are commonly sold as pets, including the Caribbean hermit crab Coenobita clypeatus.
