Cockerton
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cockerton is a suburb of Darlington in County Durham, England. It is situated immediately to the north-west of Darlington town centre, close to Mowden, Branksome, and Faverdale. The Cocker Beck, a small stream, runs through the area via a string of valley-shaped parks (or denes) and empties into the River Skerne near the town centre.
The original village layout is still recognisable, mainly due to the village green which plays host to Cockerton Cricket Club's matches. A selection of chain stores and independent retailers are based around this area.
To the north, the A1(M) motorway can be accessed via West Auckland Road in Faverdale. The somewhat constant stream of traffic entering the town from the motorway is sometimes referred to locally as the Cockerton Maggot.
