Image talk:Coasters promo.jpg

I cannot find an image of the Coasters in the public domain. This one has the effect of a promotional logo more that it does of a photo of the individual persons making up the Coasters. Mattisse(talk) 16:03, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
Our fair use policy forbids using a non-free image if a free image could be created that could be used in its place. See criterion #1 and counter-example #8. In this case, it would be possible to create a free image; therefore this non-free image may not be used. Whether a free replacement image exists or not at this time is not relevant. – Quadell (talk) (random) 16:19, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
- I guess I don't understand the part about "if a free image could be created". I did pore over fair use policy before I uploaded it and it wasn't clear to me. The personal in the group have changed over time. Some of the members of the original Coasters in the picture are not alive anymore. Do you mean a drawing? Or snap a picture of the Coasters group that does PBS donation drives? I don't think any of currrent Coasters were part of the original Coasters. Certainly the most famous one, Ben E. King, had left the Coasters by 1960. Mattisse(talk) 16:40, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

- "Created" does (in this case) mean taking a photo of the bandmembers together and licensing that photo freely. Since many in the line-up have died, however, I agree now that the image is not replaceable. – Quadell (talk) (random) 19:51, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
- I am in error on the issue of Ben E. King, as he was a member of The Drifters. However, my point remains the same -- the current personal are not the same as the members of the group in the 1950s which made the group famous and had the impact on rock and roll discussed in the article and related articles on songs by Lieber and Stoller.
