Coal India Limited

It is wholly owned Government of India company, under the administrative control of the Ministry of Coal, involved in the mining and production of coal. It contributes around 85% of coal production in India. It is the largest company in the World in terms of coal production and employs nearly 462 thousand people and is the largest corporate employer in India.

It is one of the largest 5 Companies in the country, turnover being around Rs.306.60 billion in 2004-05 and is also one of the largest tax payer (Corporate tax Rs.23.77 billion in 2004-05).

It has paid Dividend of Rs 2.75 Billion to the Govt. of India in 2004-05.

Coal India Limited was formed in 1975 as holding Company with 5 subsidiaries viz. Bharat Coking Coal Limited (#REDIRECT BCCL), Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) and Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL). Several years later, three more subsidiaries were added viz. Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) and North Eastern Coalfields Limited (NECL).
