Clydesdale Rescue Australia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Clydesdale Rescue Australia is an Australian non-profit organization dedicated to the cause of rescuing Clydesdale and other heavy horses from cruelty, neglect and harm, rehabilitating and re-homing them in a safe and nurturing environment for the rest of their natural life.

The organization is founded by Julie Keegan, previously a website designer, who now runs the operations at the horse sanctuary full-time. She tends to the day-to-day needs of the horses and other animals taking shelter at the sanctuary, while at the same time plans and carries out training on the newer horses that may not be accustomed to be handled by humans due to their unfortunate history with previous owners.

The sanctuary is located in Armidale, New South Wales, Australia. Founded in 2004, the sanctuary has been home to 19 rescued horses. First and foremost, the organization’s aim is to save as many Clydesdales as possible from immediate danger, neglect and abuse by their owners, and destruction by being sent to knackeries.

When a newly rescued horse arrives at the sanctuary, it is given veterinary check immediately to establish its health status and any treatment requirements for injury or sickness. In many cases the new arrivals are under-nourished, and as a result a special dietary requirement is drawn up to ensure that they will receive the right mix of nutrients in order to regain their optimum conditions.

For the younger horses that have the suitable temperament to be re-homed, once they are nourished back to a reasonable physical condition, they will go through a training program that is designed to help them re-establish a trust in humans, and go on to do harness work, become riding horses or just good companions to their new owners.

The sanctuary relies on donations to fund its operations. It also has a sponsorship program through which regular contributions can be directed to specific horses.
