Close, but no cigar is a common phrase of the English language, referring to a failure that was very close to being a success. The implication is that a miss, no matter how close it was, is still a miss, and in reality no better than any other miss.

The phrase probably originates from contests at fairs or carnivals where the prize was a cigar.

Close But No Cigar is also the name of a song by Weird Al Yankovic. It was released on his Straight Outta Lynwood Album.
