Cloe Elmo, Mezzo-Soprano, (1909-1962)

The renowned Italian mezzo-soprano was born in 1909 in the Italian town of Lecce. She began singing at an early age, and by age 17, she began her studies at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia. Due to the her wide range, she was initially thought to be a soprano. In fact she entered and won a voice competition in Vienna as a soprano. She continued her studies and and had first big break as Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana in 1935. Within a year, she joined La Scala as Meg Page in Verdi's Falstaff. Soon she was given roles in Il Trovatore and Tristan and Isolde, as well as many other leading mezzo roles. She made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera as Azucena in Il Trovatore in 1947. Other roles included Santuzza, Mrs. Quickly in Falstaff, and Ulrica in Un Ballo in Maschera.

She continued her career in Italy, but she abandoned her stage career in 1954 and accepted a teaching position in Ankara, where she died in 1962.

She's fondly remembered for her warm and natural voice, with its ample lower register and full high notes, as well as for her great temperament and passion.
