Clive Revill

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Clive Selsby Revill (born April 18, 1930 in Wellington, New Zealand) is an experienced character actor who has made more than 50 films and TV movies and whose work has ranged from blockbuster films to stage classics. Among his film roles were two notable films for Billy Wilder, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes in 1970 and Avanti! in 1972. He also played dour Finlay Perkin in the blockbuster 1978 American miniseries Centennial.

Revill has enjoyed his greatest success on the stage in productions like Sherry! and Oliver! (as Fagin) and the Gilbert and Sullivan Savoy Operas The Pirates of Penzance and The Sorcerer (in which he appeared in the title role of John Wellington Wells). He was twice nominated for Tony Awards for Oliver! and Irma La Douce.

Revill has also performed voice-over work in such films as Transformers: The Movie, The Hobbit, and Return to Never Land.

He is one of only four actors to appear in both an episode of Star Trek and a Star Wars film, and he is the only one to have had a speaking role in both. Revill supplied the voice of The Emperor in The Empire Strikes Back and played Sir Guy of Gisburne in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "QPid". His voice in The Empire Strikes Back was replaced with that of Ian McDiarmid for the DVD release.

He also voiced King Nod in the re-edited versions of The Thief and the Cobbler and Doctor Doom in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance.

In two instances, Revill played famous characters but was quickly replaced and forgotten as the original performer. The first instance of this was the aforementioned The Empire Strikes Back as The Emperor; he was later replaced by McDiarmid. The second instance was as the voice of Alfred Pennyworth in the first three episodes of Batman: The Animated Series. His replacement, Efrem Zimbalist Jr., would go on to voice the role for the remainder of the series and also return from time to time in a guest capacity in that show's numerous spin-offs.
