Clifton Aqueduct

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Engineered by Charles Roberts and John Nightingale, the Clifton Aqueduct allows the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal to cross the river Irwell. Of the three major aqueducts built (6 Aqueducts were built in total), two remain - this one, and Prestolee Aqueduct. The canal is currently undergoing restoration (at the time of writing, at the Salford end of the canal) and is hoped to be in operation around 2010.

Clifton Aqueduct is a grade 2 listed building. It was built in 1796.

The canal at the aqueduct is currently dry. Much work remains to restore this canal.
