Clear box (phreaking)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A clear box was an amplifier used by phreaks to circumvent certain restrictions against using pay phones without paying. Some old pay phones would let the user connect without paying but the other person could not hear the caller until coins were deposited. A clear box got around that problem, as the phone signal from the other person was not entirely absent, simply very quiet. Clear boxes were used by phone phreaks, or people involved in the act of phreaking.
