Clayton is a town in Kent County, Delaware, United States. It is part of the Dover, Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,273 at the 2000 census.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,273 people, 499 households, and 346 families residing in the town. The population density was 481.9/km² (1,242.3/mi²). There were 524 housing units at an average density of 198.4/km² (511.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 90.26% White, 8.09% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.34% of the population.
There were 499 households out of which 32.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.9% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the town the population was spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 89.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.1 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $43,462, and the median income for a family was $48,000. Males had a median income of $34,792 versus $25,862 for females. The per capita income for the town was $18,268. About 4.0% of families and 7.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.6% of those under age 18 and 8.1% of those age 65 or over.
