There are 19 classes of poultry as recognized by the American Poultry Association.

 Ten of these classes are devoted to chickens of which 6 are classes of large breeds and 5 are bantam classes.

The breeds in the large classes are divided by the region in which they were developed with the exception of the “other standard breeds”.

The bantam classes are separated by type (Game or Non-Game), by comb type and by the presence or absence of feathers on the legs.

There are four duck classes divided by weight. The ideal weight of old drakes in the heavy class is 10-12lbs., in the medium class 7-8lbs., in the light class 41/2-5lbs. and in the bantam 26-40 oz.

There are three classes of geese organized by weight. Ideal weight of an old gander in heavy class 22-26lbs., in medium class 14-18lbs., in light class 5 1/2-12lbs.

There is only one class of turkeys, which includes all breeds recognized by the American Poultry Association.
