Clarke Carlisle (born 14 October 1979 in Preston, Lancashire) is a professional English football player who currently plays for Watford. Carlisle is a defender.
Carlisle began his career as a trainee at Blackpool and eventually signed professional terms with the club. Carlisle's strong defensive performances during his three years at Blackpool attracted the attentions of Queens Park Rangers. After 8 goals in 101 appearances in all competitions with Blackpool, QPR paid £250,000 for his services. Whilst at Loftus Road, Carlisle made a number of appearances for the England U21s alongside Ledley King and Frank Lampard. Carlisle spent four years with QPR, helping them gain promotion to the Championship but also encountered off-the-field problems there. He missed a portion of the 2003/04 season after being admitted to a clinic for treatment for alcohol-related problems.
In the summer of 2004, after 212 appearances and six goals with QPR, Leeds United signed Carlisle on a Bosman free transfer. He spent one year at Elland Road, playing 38 matches and finding the net four times before moving on. As the 2005/06 season drew closer Watford manager Adrian Boothroyd came in for Carlisle and signed him for a fee of £100,000 as part of his rebuilding.
In his first season at Vicarage Road, Carlisle played in rotation with Malky Mackay and Jay Demerit as part of the defence which saw the Hornets finish in third place and gain promotion to the Premiership. Although Carlisle suffered a dip in form and a thigh injury which caused him to miss the latter part of the season, including the play-off final in which Watford beat his former employers Leeds 3-0.
On 2 March 2007, Carlisle joined local-rivals Luton Town on a months loan. He played 5 times for the Hatters as he regained his match-fitness.
