Clarence-Rockland, Ontario

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Clarence-Rockland is a bilingual city in eastern Ontario, Canada, in the United Counties of Prescott and Russell on the Ottawa River. Clarence-Rockland is located immediately to the east of Canada's National Capital Region.

In January, 2005, the city introduced a bylaw which required all new businesses to put up signs in both English and French. The bylaw was supported within the community but received unfavorable media coverage outside the community. The city is 15 per cent francophone.

The city of Clarence-Rockland was one of the first municipalities after Ottawa to introduce a non-smoking bylaw in all public establishments. This iniative has led other municipalities in the area to consider such a bylaw.

According to the 2006 Statistics Canada Census:

  • Population: 20,790
  • % Change (2001-2006): 6.0
  • Dwellings: 7,667

[edit] Mayor

On November 13th 2006, Mr. Richard Lalonde who had been the appointed (interim) mayor for the city of Clarence-Rockland was re-elected with the population's majority vote. His predecessor, M. Jean-Pierre Pierre had resigned due to conflicts of theft.

In the race to the mayor's seat, Mr. Lalonde's opponent, Mr. Bernard Payer was running for mayor with the idea of wanting to de-fusion the city of Clarence-Rockland. Unfortunately that idea wasn't what the population had in mind and so Mr. Richard Lalonde will be serving another 24 year term as mayor.
