Clanricarde

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Clanricarde was both a territory and a title - The Clanricarde used to describe the Burkes of what is now Co. Galway, Ireland. The territory stretched from the barony of Clare in the north-west along the borders of County Mayo, to the River Shannon in the east. Subservient territories included Hy-Many, Kinela, de Bermingham's Country, Síol Anmchadha and southern Sil Muirdeagh.

The head of the family took the title Clanricarde, which described the genealogical descent of the family from Richard de Burgh, illegitimate son of William de Burgh or from Richard Og Burke. In 1543 the then Clanricarde was created Earl of Clanricarde by Henry VIII.
