Clam AntiVirus (ClamAV), is a widely used free antivirus software toolkit for Unix-like operating systems. It is mainly used with a mail exchange server as a server-side email virus scanner. ClamAV is open source software distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). Both ClamAV and its updates are made available free of charge.

ClamAV is generally configured to automatically update its list of virus definitions via the Internet.

[edit] Linux

IPCop is a Linux-oriented network management solution and Copfilter is an add-on which implements ClamAV as well as other security additions.

[edit] Mac OS X

Since Server Mac OS 10.4 the Apple operating system has included ClamAV as a virus scanning service in relation to its email service. Additionally compilation assistant programs link Fink and MacPorts have had the ability to install ClamAV as well. Counteragent software from Jett Fuel Productions implements EIMS based email service using the ClamAV service to scan email for viruses on Mac OS X. Graphical Interface front ends have been created for implementing Clamav for end-users on non-server Mac OSes and include ClamXav and Tiger Cache Cleaner (see links below.)

[edit] Microsoft Windows

ClamWin provides a graphical user interface for end users to ClamAV on Microsoft Windows, including a scanning scheduler, context menu integration to Explorer, add-ins for Microsoft Outlook and Firefox.

However it does not provide real-time scanning of files as they are read and written. This is something generally seen as vital and is a feature universally provided by commercial products for Microsoft Windows, including in their freeware versions. (Experienced Windows users may be able to configure real-time scanning by using Winpooch or Tech-Protect to call ClamAV as files are opened).

[edit] Graphical User Interface Front-ends

  • ClamWin for Microsoft Windows
  • Tech-Protect for Microsoft Windows
  • KlamAV for KDE
  • ClamTk for Linux which uses gtk2-perl.
  • ClamXav is a free (but not open source) port for Mac OS X which includes a graphical user interfaces and has a "sentry" service which can watch for changes or new files in many cases. There is also an update and scanning scheduler through a cron job facilitated by the graphical interface.
  • Tiger Cache Cleaner is a shareware software for Mac OS X which installs and presents a graphic interface for using Clamav to scan their computers as well as other unrelated functions.
