CKUT-FM is the official campus-community radio station of McGill University. It can be heard at 90.3 MHz FM in Montreal, 91.7 on cable, or on the CKUT website [1]. CKUT's FM signal, broadcast from a tower on the top of Mont Royal, reaches as far as the Eastern Townships and Upstate New York. CKUT was voted as the Best Radio Station in The Montreal Mirror's Best of Montreal Readers Poll for 2006.

CKUT's programing is produced by more than 200 volunteers - McGill students and members of the community. The station also employs a handful of full time coordinators. The station's format is freeform in that each programmer is responsible for choosing music without regard to commercial interests.

A great variety of music and spoken-word shows are broadcast daily in a multiplicity of languages, including English, French, Korean, Hindi, and Haitian Creole.

CKUT established and has for the last three years hosted the annual Canadian Homelessness Marathon. Every February, the marathon broadcasts fourteen hours of live programing on homelessness in Canada from the streets of Montreal.

[edit] Controversy

In the past few years, criticisms have been levelled against CKUT claiming that they take student support for granted and are not committed to the McGill campus community. Critics alleged that CKUT's radio broadcasts could not be heard from McGill's Upper Residences, the station had a low profile on campus, and the absence of any McGill-centric or McGill-hosted content. These criticisms came to a head in Spring 2006 when the SSMU held a referendum to decide whether or not to continue being affiliated with CKUT. In the end the students decided to maintain affiliation, although another referendum held in March 2007 rejected a proposed fee increase.
