The City of Ryde is a Local Government Area in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, on the Lower North Shore.
The local government area extends from the Parramatta River to the Lane Cove River which encircles the area in the north, and is bounded in the east by the peninsula of Hunter's Hill and the city of Parramatta in the west.
There are 12 Councillors that constitute the Council. Those Councillors are elected for 4 year terms. The last election was held in March 2004. The next election will be held in September 2008.
The Councillors are elected to prepresent a particular Ward (or geographic area). At the moment Ryde Council has 3 wards with 4 Councillors elected to represent each Ward. The Councillors serving on the current term of Council are:

Councillor Ivan Petch was re-elected as Mayor on Tuesday 12 September 2006 for a further 12 month term. He defeated the other nomination for the position, Councillor Terry Perram. The ballot was conducted as an open vote with each candidate receiving 6 votes each. As the voting was tied, the name of one candidate was drawn by lot at random by the General Manager, as returning officer, and the name drawn was Councillor Petch.
Councillor Gabrielle O'Donnell was also re-elected as Deputy Mayor for the ensuing 12 month period. She defeated two other nominations for the position, Councillors Sarkis Yedelian and Vic Tagg. The first election for Deputy Mayor was conducted by the General Manager, as returning officer, which resulted in the following voting:

As a result of voting, the name of Councillor Tagg, was eliminated from the voting. The second election for Deputy Mayor was conducted by the General Manager, as returning officer, which resulted in the following voting:
Councillor O'Donnell ... 6 votes Councillor Yedelian ... 6 votes
As the voting was tied, the name of one candidate was drawn by lot at random by the General Manager, as returning officer, and the name drawn was Councillor O'Donnell.
