City and Colour is an acoustic side-project fronted by Dallas Green, who is most famous for being a member of the band, Alexisonfire. The name, City and Colour, comes from his own name: Dallas, which is a city, and Green, which is a colour. His reasoning for the name is "It always made me feel uneasy whenever I thought about putting the album out under the name Dallas Green".[2]

I've been writing stuff since I was 14 or 15 years old. A bunch of the ones on the album, I wrote when I was 18 or 19, and then a few in my early 20s, and then the rest in the last year.[2]

Green began releasing City and Colour songs underground, on the internet for fans to download. Eventually, he compiled and rewrote several of these songs to make the CD Sometimes. The full length debut was released on November 1, 2005 to a good reception, described by one reviewer as "dynamically gentle and vulnerable".[3]
