City Tower
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
City Tower is a skyscraper in Prague, the tallest one in the Czech Republic with 109 m in height, now pending radical reconstruction.
Construction was started in 1985 as a headquarter of Československý rozhlas (now Český rozhlas - Czech publicly funded radio broadcaster). In 1993 building was almost completed, but for Český rozhlas (splitted from Československý rozhlas after Czechoslovakia break-up) oversized, technically obsolete and full of dangerous asbestos. In later years Český rozlas was multiple trying to sell uncompleted building. In 1996 agreement was singed with company NIKO for price 1 billion CZK, but failed to pay that amount. Same screenplay was repeated one year later with Singaporean company Wells Holding and price 550 millions CZK. Finally building was sold in 1999 to company ECM just for 285 millions CZK.
After many preparatory and legislative steps radical reconstruction, projected by Richard Meier, started in 2005 and it is scheduled to be completed in 2008.
