Citroën Prototype Y
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Citroën Prototype Y or Citroën VD (VD was standing for Voiture Diminuée) was a project of replacement of the Citroën Ami studied by Citroën in the early seventies.
The goal of Prototype Y was to give birth to a small, robust and modern car which would have been intercalated in the Citroën range between the 2CV and the GS.
The first prototypes were based on the Fiat 127 platform, since Citroën at that time was pursuing at that time an alliance with Fiat (the only result of this alliance was finally the Citroën C35 / Fiat 242). Later models employed a torsion bar suspension set up.
In 1974, Peugeot acquired Citroën and the project was redefined as Citroën VD to incorporate the floor pan of the Peugeot 104 (of which quickly a Citroën model was released as well - the Citroën LN, thereby permitting the use of the 104 engine and transmission. The 104-based Citroën Visa thereby replaced the Prototype Y.
The original design from the Project Y was sold to Romania to become the Oltcit, sold under the commercial name of Citroën Axel in some western European markets.
