Cities / kota (formerly municipalities) and regencies / kabupaten are administrative divisions of Indonesia. They are subdivisions of Indonesian Provinces. They are subdivided into sub-districts / kecamatan.

In 1999 the term municipality / kotamadya is abolished by Local Government Law Number 22 and changed into City / kota
