Talk:Circled dot
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is the article previously known as Circumpunct.
Circumpunct was changed to a redirect to Sun symbol, where some of the original text can still be found. Apparently the reason for this was that some users objected that the name Circumpunct was a coined Brianist term - which is indeed the case.
It was not appropriate to move the article to Sun symbol any more than it would have been to move it to City center. Sun symbol is only one of this symbol's many rich and diverse meanings. It deserves an article of its own.
I have titled this article "Circle with a point at its centre" since this is the term used at Sun symbol and is therefore presumably acceptable. I grant that it is a clumsy term and would have no objection to this article being re-named as something better. (If anyone can think of something better. I can't.) Brianism apart, circumpunct or circumpuncta is indeed the correct Latin description of the symbol. But it is not a common English word and its use would likely start another Brianist edit war. Please do not rename this article to Circumpunct.
Since the Brianism article is under discussion for deletion but still exists as a part of Wikipedia, it would be proper to retain the link to Brianism. I have chosen not to do so since I do not want this article to be viewed as Brianist propoganda. This is a completely non-Brianist article about an important ancient symbol with many other meanings.

This symbol is listed in the Unicode character repertoire as symbol #2609, with canonical name SUN, and a note that it appears similar to symbol #2299, CIRCLED DOT OPERATOR. "Sun symbols" might be a good name for this article, as there are a number of other symbols that have been used to denote the Sun. -- The Anome 17:00, 17 Jan 2004 (UTC)

- "Circled dot..." Good idea. I'm moving the article to "circled dot". IMO the old title is uselessly long. --Army1987 21:20, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, one of those symbols is more frequently used to denote Nazism. Pakaran. 17:19, 17 Jan 2004 (UTC)
As I said, that is only one meaning. It would be like renaming an article on wood "elm". And I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the Sun symbol article. Anjouli 17:14, 17 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Any reason why there are no citations on this page? I might have to add that tag on the top of the page. Zos 06:41, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
