Circular mil

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A circular mil is a unit of area, equal to the area of a circle with a diameter of one mil. A mil is one thousandth of an inch. A circular mil is a convenient unit for referring to the area of the cross section of a wire or cable with a circular cross section, as the area can be calculated without reference to pi.

The area in circular mils, A, of a circle with a diameter of d mils, is given by: A = d2

In wire gauge (cable sizing), the acronym MCM or kcmil means a thousand circular mils.
