[edit] Fahrenheit Theater Company

The group began as Fahrenheit Theater Company (FTC) with a small grant in 1993 by Marni Penning, Nick Rose, R. Chris Reeder and Jasson Minadakis. The mission was to produce Shakespeare and the classics for modern audiences. Although they had a home base in Clifton, for the first few years they went to several theaters to perform.

[edit] Season 0 (1993)

In late 1993, the fledgling company put on a very modest production in a downtown art gallery.

The Fahrenheit Theatre Company found a new home during the second season, moving into the newly constructed Aronoff Performance Center's Fifth Third Bank Theatre in the heart of downtown Cincinnati. Once again, though, the second season consisted of five productions.

Season Three saw five more productions and the final production under the guise of FTC. It was announced in February 1997, during this season, that the company would henceforth be known as the Cincinnati Shakespeare Festival (CSF). The name change was decided upon in order to clarify the company's mission and relationship to other regional Shakespeare theatres. Also during the third season, FTC initiated the Educational Touring Company, travelling to various schools in the area to spread Shakespeare to the youth of the region.

[edit] Season IV (1997-1998)

Season Four saw the new name of the company as the Cincinnati Shakespeare Festival. Once again, there were five productions in addition to the Educational Tours. In 1998, CSF moved into a small movie theater on Race Street in Downtown Cincinnati, former home of The Movies, and converted it into a small thrust-stage theatre with 185 seats including 45 seats on the stage. The company continues to perform in this very theatre.

Also, in 1999, CSF became one of the first Associate Members of the Cincinnati Fine Arts Fund with eight other local arts organizations.

[edit] Season VII (2000-2001)

Season Seven saw the addition of two more shows to the schedule, bringing a total of nine productions for the season. Also, it was decided in 2000 to make the ensemble of seven actors full-time staff members. This was done because CSF believed that by paying actors a living wage, it would allow them to focus more exclusively on the craft and developing their skills.

[edit] Season VIII (2001-2002)

This would be the final season with Minadakis at the helm, as he left in 2001 to pursue more contemporary work. It was also decided that CSF would launch the Young Company program. The Young Company was to give early-career classical actors a full year of training and performance with the CSF resident ensemble. Also, the Young Company members serve as the primary Education Ambassadors, performing in the Two Hours' Traffic programs. The Young Company program can be seen as a stepping stone for young actors to prestigious regional theatres throughout the United States.

Upon Minadakis leaving the company, he asked Rose to return to the company in the capacity of Artistic Director. Rose was joined by Brian Isaac Philips, who leads the company today. The company finished a major renovation to its theatre space by installing over 150 new seats, courtesy of a generous grant from the city of Cincinnati.

For its Tenth Anniversary Season, CSF had a full-time staff of early-career professionals including six resident ensemble actors, six Young Company actors, two resident designers, and eight arts management administrators. With the continued support of their local, loyal audiences, donors and sponsors, CSF finished up its first decade while looking forward to another decade of producing Shakespeare and the classics in Cincinnati.

[edit] Season XII: Empire

The 2005-2006 season, entitled Empire finished up officially on Sunday, May 28, 2006 with the final production of Richard III in front of a sold out audience. The Otto M. Budig Family Foundation was the season sponsor for Empire. Season XII was a large success and will be the final season under the moniker of Cincinnati Shakespeare Festival, as CSF has announced a name change for the upcoming season, season XIII: Hopes and Dreams. Starting with the 2006-2007 season, CSF will be under the guise of the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. The name change is in hopes of better conveying the ensemble company nature of the theatre and its troupe of year-round actors.

"In Season Twelve we will explore the rise and decline of the greatest civilizations to ever exist and the personal effect a community can have on an individual. People are defined by the society in which they live; they are molded by the harshness or warmth their community possesses. This is the personal side, the intimate story of an empire." -Artistic Director, Brian Isaac Phillips
