Cider Punk

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cider punk is a subcategory of the punk subculture, originating in the early 1980s in the West Country of England with the emergence of the bands Chaos UK and Chaotic Dischord.[citation needed]

Besides Chaos UK and Chaotic Dischord, other bands that fall into the Cider Punk category are the Varukers and Disorder. It can be described as a mixture of UK82 punk, punk pathetique, and crust punk, transcending these categorizations through the consumption of large amounts of cider. Cider Punk was also championed in the UK zine Arnie by cartoonist Simon Gane.[citation needed]

Cider Punk is characterized by an unconventional and anti-materialistic lifestyle. These aspects are exaggerated and made humorous through anti-intellectualism and an obsession with alcohol consumption. The music is more stripped down and raw than standard punk rock. Quite often, the guitars are so distorted that the chords are almost unintelligible. the lyrics are also often unintelligible.

Examples of Cider Punk song titles include: "Fuck Religion, Fuck Politics, Fuck the Lot of You!", "Sausage, Beans & Chips", "Destroy Peace & Freedom", "Loud, Tuneless n' Thick", "Too Cool For School, Too Stupid For The Real World (Let's Form A Band)" and "Head On A Pole".

Cider Punk was picked up by American punks (specifically in Oakland, California and Baltimore, Maryland in the early 1990s), who added it to their burgeoning Medieval Punk and Folk Punk movements.[citation needed]
