Cibao International Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto Internacional del Cibao) (IATA: STIICAO: MDST) is an international airport in Santiago de los Caballeros, the Dominican Republic's second largest city, in the Cibao region. It has a modern terminal with some of the most advanced airport facilities. It serves mostly Dominicans living in the United States and other Caribbean islands like Cuba, the Turks and Caicos Islands, Puerto Rico and Panama.

[edit] Passenger Terminal

Cibao Airport has a main terminal with 6 gates (B1-B6), it has 3 gates with boarding bridge (B4-B6), and the other 3 gates are without it. This airport has a medium height runway, 2,620 m, but it can support a Boeing 747-400 and also a Boeing 777-200 landing in there. They're planing to expand the airport, with more gates and baggages claims, also they're thinking to add a taxiway.

This airport also has an ILS or Ilumination Landing System created to facilitate the landings of the airplanes in this airport. Las Americas International Airport and Cibao International Airport are the uniques airports in the Dominican Republic using the ILS.

American is the mayor airline operating in cibao airport. In the 2005's summer it had 5 daily flights to JFK, 2 daily flights to MIA and 2 daily to SJU. In the 2007's summer it will have 3 to JFK, 2 to MIA and one to SJU for now.

JetBlue is an other important airline in Cibao airport, the most of the time it has only one daily flight to JFK but seasonal it adds two more flights to this airport. JetBlue is also interested to fly to FLL, but it is not sure.

Continental Airlines operates flights between Santiago and Newark. This airline has brought to Santiago its enormous greater Boeing 767-400 and still its Boeing 777-200 like answer to the enormous amount of passengers who go towards the city of New York. New York is the main destination from Cibao Airport, as much so it has had up to 9 daily flights between these cities. And if you think that it is little, this airport is only 5 years old and in addition is the unique one in Dominican Republic in having such amount of flights to New York city.

Cibao Airport has a cargo terminal with 4 gates for cargo carriers like Amerijet, Cargo Logistic... The cargo carriers on Cibao Airport have regular flights from Santiago to the USA and other caribbean islands like St. Maarten, The Bahamas...

In the first year of operation (2002) the Cibao Airport had 5 to 6 daily flights, now (2007) it has from 17 to 25 daily flights to the USA, the Caribbean and Central America. It doesn't have flights to Europe or Canada yet but it will serves in the near future.

In 2005 this airport recived an Antonov AN-124 from Spain for military activity in the frontier with Haiti. It stayed 2 days in Santiago, after flew back to Spain.

In the 2006, Air Europa, Dominican investors and the Government, joined a total of $10 million dollars like capital to form the airline so needed by the country, which will be called Air Dominicana, that will begin its operations in April of the 2008. According to some information, the investors are Aerodom, Groupo Punta Cana, Popi Bermúdez and others more. Main hubs of this awaited airline will be Las Americas International Airport, Cibao International Airport and Punta Cana International Airport.

This airport also serves as air base for Santiago. Here the airplanes are resupplied battle when dates for DR acts in importants as March 30 with the battle of the 30 of March. The military activity in this airport very is not pronounced since this one is mainly public.

The Cibao International Airport does not have fatal incidents or any accidents, but it haved some little problems with US carriers.

  • August 31, 2005: flight AA1774 of American Airlines to JFK, had an engine problem and had to return to the airport. The Captain said that they smelled smoke in the cabine. No injoures
  • September 2006, flight AA2054 of American Airlines to JFK. This flight had schedule departure at 04:11pm, but American had to delay this flight to 07:30am (next day), just because a fort wind dragged an object until the window of the airplane, breaking it and in this way, delaying the flight.
