The Central Intelligence Agency has been actively involved in promoting United States interests abroad by overthrowing foreign governments.

[edit] Iran and Mossadegh
The CIA overthrew the Iranian premier Mohammed Mossadegh who had attempted to nationalize Iran's oil threatening the interests of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. The coup which was called Operation Ajax was led by CIA operative Kermit Roosevelt, Jr..

The CIA overthrew the government of Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán. Arbenz had nationalized a US owned fruit exporting company and the owner of the company who had close ties to the Dulles brothers convinced them to overthrow the regime. There were also fears in the US government that Guatemala could become another beachhead for Soviet influence in the region, due to the Socialist policies of the Arbenz government.

The largest and most complicated CIA-led coup effort was the Bay of Pigs operation where CIA trained Cuban anti-communist mercenaries were landed in Cuba to help overthrow the Castro regime. The CIA made many attempts to assassinate Castro.
