Church of the Savior on Bolvany

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Church of the Savior on Bolvany (Russian: церковь Спаса на Болванах, tserkov' Spasa na Bolvanakh), an Orthodox church in Zamoskvorechye, Moscow. It was built on the defense line used during the Mongol invasion of Rus.[1] The church derives its name from Russian bolvan, which could mean either a billet or, in obsolete sense, a non-Orthodox cult image. The Spaso-Bolvanskiy Lane was named after the church.
