Church of the Holy Sacrament, Warsaw

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Warsaw's Church of Order of the Holy Sacrament (Kościół Sakramentek) is a church in the New Town of the capital of Poland, at 52°15′12″N, 21°0′31″E. It is also known as St. Casimir's Church.

It was commissioned by Queen Maria Sobieska after her husband Jan III Sobieski defeated the Turks at the gates of Vienna.

Tylman of Gameren designed the church in Palladian style, as was done with the majority of the buildings being reconstructed after the Deluge.

Just as in neighbouring St. Jacek's Church, during the Second World War it was used as a hospital and suffered from severe bombing in the Warsaw Uprising. At one strike, over 1,000 people died inside the church. It was completely reconstructed between 1947 and 1952.
