Chupacabra Policia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Chupacabra Policia is a theme camp and social group which has appeared at Burning Man and smaller burn events such as Burning Flipside, Transformus, and Myschievia. Their name was derived from the chupacabra, a mythical "goat-sucking" creature, and policia, the Spanish word for police (referring to the paramilitary or law enforcement uniforms they wear). However, they should not be confused with the Black Rock Rangers, whose limited authority is sanctioned by event organizers.
The organization's stated goals include "harassing hippies, audio terrorism, and keeping goats safe from suckers." Many of their activities, such as the "Jim Jones Power Hour" in which they gave out vodka-laced Kool-Aid while broadcasting Jim Jones recordings at high volume, have become notorious amongst the Burning Flipside community. (The Power Hour theme has been used more recently at Burning Flipside 2006, where they held the "Kim Jong Il Power Hour") Indeed, the group has been the center of some controversy at Flipside (where they arguably have their largest presence) because their behavior often stands at stark contrast to the loving, laid-back atmosphere of a typical Burner event. At Burning Flipside 2005, the group killed (and ate) animals, and were responsible for organizing the controversial Cthulhu Devival. To be certain, the policy of the CP has been to provoke and influence fellow participants with music and noise. They had a huge success at Burning Flipside 2006 with the 20-foot tall "Black Tower," at which participants could select the noise or music of their choice and play it at a volume of their choosing. This tower was the largest interactive sound installation in the history of Burning Flipside.
