Chungbuk National University is one of major 10 national universities in Korea along with Seoul National University, Pusan National University Kyungpook National University, Chonnam National University, Chungnam National University, Chonbuk National University, Gyeongsang National University, Kangwon National University, and Cheju National University. The university located in Cheongju City, the capital of North Chungcheong province, South Korea. It takes its name, Chungbuk, from the common abbreviated form of the province's Korean name. It enrolls about 18,000 students at the undergraduate level, and another 2,000 in post-graduate programs. The current president is Dong-Cheol Lim.

Undergraduate courses are provided through thirteen colleges: Humanities, Social Science, Natural Science, Commerce and Business Administration, Engineering, Electronic and Computer Engineering, Agriculture, Law, Education, Home Economics, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, and Medicine.

The school first opened its doors as "Cheongju Junior Agricultural College" (청주초급농과대학) in 1951. At the time, it was operated by the provincial government of North Chungcheong. It became a four-year college in 1953, and was renamed simply Chungbuk Provincial College in 1956. In 1962, the national government merged it with Chungnam National University to create the short-lived Chungcheong National University. The two institutions were separated once again in 1963, but Chungbuk College remained under national control. A graduate school was established in 1968. On December 31, 1977, the college was renamed Chungbuk National University.

The university maintains exchange relationships with 15 institutions in seven countries: Uzbekistan (Tashkent Nizami Pedagogical University), Poland (Warsaw University), Canada (University of Victoria), China (Manjing Normal University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Chinese Academy of Social Science), Japan (Ibaraki University), the United Kingdom (University of Reading, University of Glasgow, University of Wales), and the United States (University of Maine, Colorado State University, St. John's University, Rutgers University, Washington State University).
