Chullora, New South Wales

Chullora is a suburb in south-western Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located 15km south west of the Sydney central business district in the south-eastern skirts of Auburn Council.

Chullora is essentially an industrial area with several warehouses are located in the Chullora suburb, within Chillora Business Park, including the Sydney Tip Top Bakeries and the OfficeMax Sydney warehouse. The suburb is also the site of printing for the newspapers The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Sunday Herald, The Daily Telegraph and the Sunday Telegraph.

The Hume Highway and Waterloo Road are the two main roads that runs through the suburb. Waterloo Road is also the main road for the neighbouring suburb of Greenacre. Both suburbs share common amenities.

The Chullora Railway Workshops service and repair City Rail suburban and inter-urban trains.

Chullora is located close to Strathfield, Greenacre, Lidcombe and Bankstown. Frequent bus services by Transit First service this region along with Punchbowl Coach buses.

The suburb of Chullora was originally part of the area known as Liberty Plains, which was land given to the first free settlers who arrived in Sydney Cove on the 6th January 1793. Chullora was the name used for one of the estates in this area.

In the 1950s, many emigrants from Europe were housed in the area, until these people gained enough money to buy property and move elsewhere.

Chullora is also an Aboriginal word meaning 'flour'. The recent construction of the Sydney Tip Top bakeries in the Chullora Business Park, has perhaps brought the suburbs back to its roots.

The local sports team for Chullora are the Chullora Wolves, with the homeground in the local park.
